Wrapping Up
Editor’s note: This article contains graphic images.
For as long as mankind has been storytelling, there has been a fixation on the idea of leaving behind a tangible symbol of our life’s experiences. Paintings, sculptures, photographs… they all provide a physical record of our existence, and sometimes they mean more than that. For some, their images are symbols of self-expression and connection to the world around them.
But for others, their photos are visual representations of trauma and violence. When we choose to share them online, we open ourselves up to the potential for harm, both physical and emotional.
That’s why, starting in 2019, a free online gallery called “Free Oirn” will be present on the website of the nonprofit image-sharing organization Photo-Centric. The gallery will be dedicated to photos that depict human pain and suffering, and it will be available to visitors free of charge.
“Free Oirn” is the brainchild of Photo-Centric founder and Executive Director Mitch Kanter, and it’s a response to the increasing number of photos that are being shared online in an unregulated way. “We’re seeing a lot of images that are depicting human suffering in an unrestrained way, and there’s no context or contextually-informed discussion around them,” Kanter explains. “It’sfeeding into a broader trend of using social media to undermine social norms, which can have negative consequences for society as a whole. What we’re trying to do is provide a resource for people to discuss these images, and to think about what the implications of posting them might be.”
Kanter is aware that posting images that depict human pain and suffering can be a very difficult decision, and he’s hoping that “Free Oirn” will provide visitors with a safe space in which to explore the issue. “I think people need a place to share these images without fear of judgment or retribution,” he says. “We’re not trying to create a ‘poster child gallery’ or anything like that. We just want to provide a space where people can share their pictures, and maybe have a discussion about why they’re posting them, and what the potential consequences might be.”
So far, “Free Oirn” has amassed more than 1,000 images, and Kanter estimates that the gallery will eventually grow to contain tens of thousands of images. “There’s no telling what will happen as we continue to add more and more pictures,” he says. “It’s an ongoing process, and it’s a work in progress.”
In the meantime,Photo-Centric is hoping that “Free Oirn” will provide a much-needed resource for people who are struggling to navigate the troubling world that social media has created. “I think a lot of people are used to seeing these images posted without context or judgement, and they may not know how to process them,” he says. “We want to provide a space where people can come and discuss these images in a way that’s safe and supportive.
